Shipping must become 'greener'

Date:
25/01/2007

UK shipping faces two challenges: carbon emissions and globalisation, secretary of state for transport Douglas Alexander told guests at Monday's Chamber of Shipping annual dinner. "It is more important than ever that shipping ... takes full advantage of greener technologies," Alexander said, pointing out that growing world trade means that maritime emissions are increasing, despite better fuel efficiency. And in that world trade, UK shipping is "well positioned to become more competitive in the global market not by undercutting competitors but by … being better." He also praised those who had helped develop the Maritime Labour Convention and assured guests that the government "will work with you closely to ensure the UK plays its part in making it work."
